Those are some of the first words we hear at the start of Justin Kurzel 's The Order , the best film of 2024. They are spoken by Alan Berg (played by Marc Maron ), a Jewish talk radio host was murdered by members of a white supremacist group (known as The Order) in 1984.  It's an arresting piece of voiceover, paired with a haunting God's eye view of a dark winding road in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. 2019 was a trying year. The movies have always reflected that state of the world, the state of ourselves. It's no wonder that some of the year's finest films ( A Hidden Life , Waves , One Child Nation ) deal with trauma through acts of forgiveness. This isn't a rah-rah moment for the world. We are hurting. But through these gestures of introspection and attempting to understand what could manifest such negativity in our lives, we become a new kind of strength. At the close of every year, film critics and cinephiles tend to label it as a "good" or "bad" year for movies. Personally, I'm at the point in my life where I think every year is a good year for film. Some years might have more masterpieces in them, sure, but aren't we always discovering new ideas, images and icons when all is said and done? To help make this point, I expanded my best of the year video to include 50 films (in the past, I've done as many as 30 films). You'll notice that certain awards-darlings like Dunkirk and Darkest Hour -- among others -- aren't on my list. They just didn't do it for me, plain and simple. And as opposed to including a shortlist of the year's worst films, like Tulip Fever and Transformers: The Last Knight , I'd rather put a spotlight on the year's most disappointing film: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri . While many were quick to dismiss 2016 as an altogether terrible year--largely due to the year rounding out with TV celeb Donald Trump as the President Elect--it wasn't a throwaway year for the movies. During a time of national unrest and uncertainty, the narratives that graced the silver screen beamed with characters, ideas and themes of unfettered hope...for better or for worse. Whether it was the harsh lesson of growing up and having your heart broken ( Café Society ) or choosing to live a lie in exchange for short-term happiness ( The Light Between Oceans ), the individuals we followed in the cinema were the silver screen embodiment of our unabashed urges to make that jump, to take a leap of faith and step away from our secure existence and reach out to the unknown.
